This mug design was inspired by Mitsuo Kakutani whom I met during my apprenticeship at St. Johns Pottery in Collegeville, MN. He did it all, painting, sculpture, and pottery. He inspired with story and his inquisitive silence. When gathering with former apprentices, visiting artists, and friends of the studio, we all have a Mitsuo story. I remember picking up a mug that he had made for the 8th firing of the Johanna Becker kiln at St. Johns. That moment changed the way I related to the mug form. He taught me that the mug can be generous, it can reach out of hold you as you hold it. These handles were made for the human hand. Who knew that drinking your morning coffee or tea could be even more effortless? Thank you, Mitsuo. Your life was a gift.
