Dark Shino Shiboridashi

$75.00
sold out

This piece is a Japanese-style shiboridashi, a traditional steeping vessel used for fine green teas such as gyokuro and high-grade sencha. I also use my shiboridashi for puehr and oolong tea over multiple steeps. The low, wide form and flat, close-fitting lid are designed to let tea leaves open fully in shallow water, while the small pouring notch allows the liquid to be gently “squeezed out” without disturbing the leaves. The shape encourages careful, deliberate brewing, making it ideal for teas that reward attention and restraint.

The surface is finished in a dark Shino glaze that breaks into soft, smoky tones with iron-rich speckling and warm flashes at the rim and lid. Subtle variations in color and texture record the path of flame through the kiln, giving the piece a quiet, geological depth. Each shiboridashi is slightly different, carrying the marks of firing and cooling that make it both a functional tea vessel and a small, contemplative object.
